Kathleen Flaherty, a member of Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy's Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, will speak about her experiences with the Commission and her perspectives on their findings and the national debate that followed.

Ms. Flaherty is an attorney and currently serves as Associate Executive Director of the Connecticut Legal Rights Project. She has also been open about her experiences with bi-polar disorder and depression and how these experiences shaped her voice and contributed to the recommendations of the Commission around mental health policy emanating from the horrific shooting of 26 school children.

Ms. Flaherty's presentation will be as a part of the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS) regional membership meeting. However, admission is open to the public and free thanks to the support of the two major sponsors of Mental Health Awareness Week: South Oaks Hospital of North Shore/LIJ Health Systems, and Concern for Independent Living.

He made this documentary directorial debut as part of his fight against the stigma and shame of mental/brain disease. Nearly 100 million Americans suffer in isolation. Here Pantoliano’s candid and humorous discussions with his family shed light on their struggles with clinical depression. It also includes compelling stories of a brain surgeon with bipolar disorder, a psychologist with ADHD, and three high school students managing bipolar disorder and clinical depression. Each discusses the struggle before they were diagnosed, including attempts at self-medication and other destructive behavior. Hope and encouragement are discovered when, managing their own recovery, they realize they are not alone. A discussion with refreshments will follow the viewing of this film.

Participants will do 22 push-ups every 22 minutes. In between, sponsoring organizations will speak for a few minutes either sharing a personal story or talking about the programs that are offered and how physical health and wellness has changed their outlook on life and the impact it has had on their life. The goal of the event is to promote awareness of the issues surrounding Veterans’ suicide as well as healthy ways to promote positive mental health through physical health and wellness. The event will also raise awareness and provide resources to student Veterans and peers regarding organizations providing health and wellness programs.

Brooke Ellison became a quadriplegic after she was struck by a car as a seventh-grader. In 2002, her inspirational life story was published in "Miracles Happen: One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey." Her life accomplishments -- which include earning a bachelors and master's degree from Harvard University, a PhD from SUNY Stony Brook, and running for New York State Senate -- have been an inspiration to many. A 2004 television film was directed by fellow quadriplegic Christopher Reeve, star of Superman. In 2009, Ellison teamed up with director James Siegel to create the winning documentary "Hope Deferred," which aims to educate the general public about embryonic stem cell research.

This 2015 documentary is an honest and moving look at one family’s journey with mental illness as a father and son walk across their state in an attempt to shatter mental health stigmas. After a Missouri high school loses three students to suicide, Mark Norwine (a mental health advocate) embarks on a 200-mile walk, seeking to educate students and better understand the epidemic for himself. Mark is joined by his son, Eric, but when the road proves difficult, father and son must confront their own mental health struggles, which they've kept secret for a long time. Endorsed by universities and mental health organizations across the U.S., Walking Man is an honest look at a family's journey with mental illness.

Community and government mental health providers are invited to attend this Town Board meeting to kick-off Mental Health Awareness Week and make a brief statement during the Public Comment portion of the meeting. Vivien is a graduate of Hofstra University’s Creative Arts Therapy Program as well as NYU’s International Trauma Studies Program. She has been an adjunct faculty member at Hofstra University since 1996. Vivien is also a member of the Mental Health Players through the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and maintains a private practice which focuses on bereavement.

This is a unique, free training developed by Pat Deegan and Associates, LLC. Participants will experience what it is like to live with distressing voices, which may help to create a change in the way we interpret behaviors of people who hear voices. LIFO first presented this training in 2015 and the response was undeniably positive. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of what voice hearers go through daily. Our goal is to assist you and/or staff to reflect a newfound empathy and appreciation of people with psychiatric disabilities.
The teaching is two-fold: It starts with a video of Dr. Pat Deegan, PhD. Dr. Deegan is a person in recovery from schizophrenia and a voice hearer herself. She explains what voice hearing is and importantly, what it is not. Dr. Deegan talks briefly of her own voice hearing and other sensory experiences. The second part of the training is comprised of a simulation during which participants navigate the training facility while hearing distressing voices and performing tasks, answering questions and interacting with others.
NOTE: If you are an individual that experiences hearing distressing voices, this workshop may not be beneficial.

Eric Arauz is a renowned Life Transformation speaker and the award-winning author of his life story, “An American Resurrection.” Eric’s talk will use art, science, literature, and personal narrative to travel with the audience through his “unbelievable but not unlivable” life’s journey. This journey took him from near lethal child abuse and numerous psychiatric hospitalizations to a medical school faculty appointment, multiple national advocacy awards, and creating the first statewide trauma training for all child welfare workers in New Jersey. Eric has survived his mental illness and has used his experience to assist others. “I’m not successful in spite of my mental illness, I am successful because of it.”

To promote awareness of the issues surrounding Veterans suicide as well as healthy ways to promote positive mental health through physical health and wellness. Our goal is provide important resources to student Veterans and peers on organizations providing physical health and wellness programs. The "22" number was part of a statistic that was originally released through a case study done by the Department of Veteran Affairs in 2012, but since then have release an updated study showing the rate had fallen to "20" veteran suicides per day. We will do 22 push-ups every 22 minutes. In between, sponsoring organizations will speak for a few minutes either sharing a personal story or talking about some of the programs that are offered and how physical health and wellness has changed their outlook on life and the impact it has had on their life. Veteran resource tables will be on display to hand out organization and community information. The challenge is not just doing push-ups but to explain the concept of a buddy check, battle buddy, or wingman, as well as to help dispel misconceptions of talking about suicide, and remove the stigma about asking for help.

Registration will begin 8:30 a.m. and the conference will start promptly at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m.

The conference theme and focus is "Recovery in Action: Moving Forward." We will hear from two very well known speakers in the nation and community speak on how they are Raising the Recovery Bar in their personal and professional life. The audience will be invited to respond with feedback, experiences, and ideas how the recovery bar can be raised.

Featuring Keynote Speaker: Leah Harris, M.A.: Leah is a mother, advocate and storyteller who has written and spoken widely about her lived experiences of trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, and healing/resilience. Ms. Harris is the CEO of Shifa Consulting, a woman owned and operated enterprise specializing in customized training in mind-body resilience practices and creative expressive arts, including theatre and storytelling.

Featuring Motivational Speaker: Terri Muuss: Terri is a multi-career tour de force who balances a full-time social work gig with directing shows, writing books, a motivational speaker at conferences and colleges, and running a private practice. Mrs. Muuss' second book, God-Spine, is forth coming.

The Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families has partnered with the Veterans Yoga Project to provide an evening of Family Wellness on Friday evening, 10/12/18 from 6:00pm-7:30pm. The event is in support of Mental Health Awareness Week. We are excited to provide service members, veterans, and family members with an opportunity to practice yoga and mindful resilience in a healing environment. All levels of practitioners are welcome as the class is designed for light physical movement and greater emphasis on mindfulness. Yoga will largely be chair based. Families are encouraged to attend as we will provide fun, wellness-themed activities for children. Dinner will also be provided and information on community resources will be disseminated as well.
